NATCOMP 2010

The National Band Competition is an annual Marching Band Competition organized by the Ministry of Education Malaysia. It is a celebration of music and hardwork for all participating bands as Malaysia’s finest Marching Bands compete in this exhilarating and exciting event to win the coveted national championship. 

The National Band Competition 2010 is expected to draw a bigger and better participation with the inclusion of University Level Category. With this inclusion, the level and standard of performances will be uplifted with par international standards being underlined as the main essence to be crowned National Champion.

The National Band Competition, is a tool of excellence for many. The passion, determination and self discipline have embodied in the hearts and minds of each and every member in pursuit of merit and quality in them. This translates in the development of a better and fruitful future for the country aligned with the 1Malaysia vision towards year 2020 as Malaysia becomes a fully developed country.

Hence, the National Band Competition has set a spectrum of objectives to its stakeholders regardless of their nature and background to take this exciting event seriously. Not only it promotes positive lifestyle but also a tool of unity to bring the best in everyone through music.
 

Rules & Regulations 

General Rules
  1. The competition will be divided into 2 division:-.

    • Zone Qualifying Rounds

    • Grand Finals

  2. The Zone Qualifying Rounds will be held as follows:-

    • South Zone

    • East Coast Zone

    • North Zone

    • Sabah Zone

    • Sarawak Zone

    • Central Zone

  3. Each Zone Qualifying Round will be judged by the same set of judges.

  4. A total of ten (10) bands will be selected based on order of merit based of national rankings on their total marks during the Zone Qualifying Rounds. Therefore, the winner of a qualifying round may not necessarily qualify for the Grand Finals as only the best ten (10) bands from around the country will qualify.

  5. The minimum number of members for a band is 40 with a maximum of 90 members. This however, does not include the drum major / majorette and conductor.

  6. All band members including drum major / majorette and conductor must be a registered student of the school.

  7. Any items and performing paraphernalia in form of powder, water, oils and explosives are prohibited.

  8. The use of electrical musical instruments is not allowed.

  9. Floor markings for performances are as follows:-

    • Competition Arena

      • Length - 60 Meters

      • Width - 40 Meters

    • Marking Format

Admission & Participation
  1. Admissions for NATCOMP Zone Qualifying Rounds are open to all bands from the government and government aided schools.

  2. Admission to the NATCOMP Grand Finals are limited to only ten (10) bands that tops the national rankings

Attire & Uniforms
  1. Attire and uniforms for all band members, drum major/majorette and conductor must be of proper and respectable.

Order of Performances
  1. All order of performance shall be made by draw.

  2. Performance sequence of bands at the Grand Finals shall be based on national ranking from lowest to highest rank. i.e from number 10 to number 1.

  3. All draw results are final.

  4. All performing bands shall follow the order of performance as drawn in a continuous sequence.

  5. Instructions for entry and exit for all performing bands shall be by the direction set by the Technical and Organizing Committee.

Repertoire & Performance
  1. Performances by bands taking part in the competition are subject to their own creativity and must be of a thematic performance.

  2. All selection of songs and repertoire must not be listed as banned by the government of Malaysia.

  3. Selection and performance of local songs are encouraged.

Duration of Performance
  1. Each performing band shall be given a total time of not more than 20 minutes which covers the following aspects:-

    • Entry

    • Set Up

    • Performance

    • Take Down

    • Exit

  2. The total time for performance for a band are as follows:-

    • Minimum : 10 minutes

    • Maximum : 12 minutes

  3. Awards of marks shall be based on performance within the given time.

  4. Judging of each performance will end by the 12th minute.

  5. Judging time shall begin after the first salute by the drum major/majorette and ends with the final salute by the drum major/majorette (marked as end of performance)

  6. All performing bands shall follow the order of performance set in a continuous sequence.

  7. The conducts of entry onto the competition arena are as follows:-

    • As the announcement is being made and the current performing band leaves the competition arena, the incoming band shall move to the preparation area set.

    • Only soft/light drum beats are allowed to mark time of the incoming band onto the competition arena.

    • The total time given for a band starts as the incoming band passes the entry point mark set.

    • All equipments and materials needed for the performance and props must be carried by performing band members while the band enters onto the performance arena.

  8. The conducts of exit from the competition arena are as follows:-

    • As the announcement is being made and the incoming performing band begins to move onto the preparation area, the current band exits through the route set.

    • Only soft/light drum beats are allowed to mark time of the band exiting the competition arena.

    • All bands must take down all equipment and materials used out of the competition arena as the master of ceremony thanked them for the performance.

    • Total time given for a band ends as the last person passes the exit point set.

    • All equipment and performance materials must be taken out of the competition arena.

Musical Instruments
  1. Each performing bands are free to use their musical instruments according to their creativity.

  2. The use of any form of electrical musical instruments is not allowed.

  3. The organizing committee will not be responsible to prepare any sort of musical instruments and that all musical instruments are to be brought by the competing bands themselves.

Colour Guards & Flags
  1. Each competing band is free to use their creativity to produce their performance.

  2. Members of the Colour Guards line may not necessarily play a specific instrument but must be with the band.

  3. Uniform and attire of the Colour Guards Line must the proper and decent.

  4. All Colour Guards and Flags must be carried in and out of the competition arena by performing members.

Judging System
  1. The NATCOMP judging system will apply the format of DRUM CORPS EUROPE (D.C.E) and Malaysia WBC.

  2. The schematic of judging scores are as attached.

Penalty
  1. Each performance that exceeds the maximum performance time will be given a 0.1 point penalty for every seconds lapse.

  2. Each performance that encroach the competition arena boundaries will be given a 0.1 point penalty for every encroachment made.

  3. A penalty of 2.5 points will be imposed to bands that infringe other rules and regulations of the competition.

Awards
  1. All bands will be entitled to awards based on the following order of merit:-

    • Gold Award (Certificate) - 75 marks and above

    • Silver Award (Certificate) - 60 marks – 74.9 marks

    • Bronze Award (Certificate) - 45 marks – 59.9 marks

    • Participation Award (Certificate) - 44.9 marks and below

  2. Best Drum Major / Majorette Award (Trophy)

  3. Best Horn Line Award (Trophy)

  4. Best Percussion Line Award (Trophy)

  5. Best Colour Guards Award (Trophy)

Prizes 
  1. Zone Qualifying Rounds

    • Champion - Certificate of Participation

    • 1st Runner Up - Certificate of Participation

    • 2nd Runner Up - Certificate of Participation

  2. Grand Finals

    • Champion - RM5000 - Trophy & Certificate

    • 1st Runner Up - RM3000 - Trophy & Certificate

    • 2nd Runner Up - RM2000 - Trophy & Certificate
