Isaac Chia - Former School band: SMJK Katholik, PJ, Selangor

A Malaysian composer/ arranger and conductor, trumpeter, graduated from University College Sedaya International (UCSI), Malaysia, with a bachelor of music granted by University of Newcastle, Australia.

Between 1996 ~ 1998, he participated in the Peninsular Youth Camp & Concert Tour which toured several states in Malaysia. In 1997, he participated in the 7th Japan International Youth Musicale, in Shizuoka, Japan and was selected to be a member of the Asian Youth Orchestra (AYO) in 2000 and 2001, conducted by Sergiu Comissiona; which took him to Hong Kong, Vietnam, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Singapore, East Malaysia and Australia.

Isaac’s interest in music composition led him towards many song-writing opportunities. In 2000, he was the 1st runner up for the Formula Malaysia Song & Lyrics Composition Competition and in 2001, he was commissioned to compose the theme song for the Marching Band for the SEA Games.

During his final year at UCSI, he co-wrote a musical Green Tea with two inspiring composers, San Weng Onn and Wong Shen Vee . Isaac served as Music Director for the stage performances in 2002 and 2003 and the musical received a great response from audiences and critics. In 2004, he went on to co-produce a CD album of the musical.

Upon graduation from UCSI, Isaac was commissioned by Sidang Injil Borneo Kuala Lumpur to compose and orchestrate the score for another stage musical Drunk Before Dawn, which was premiered in 2004. This musical was re-staged in 2006 and also traveled to Kota Kinabalu after some modification to the original script and enhancing the score.

Isaac has worked with The Canticle Singers (TCS) and its Artistic Director, Chin San Sooi on two musical productions. The first involved orchestrating the production score for a Broadway type musical Do You Hear The People Sing in 2004. The second was to critique and substantially revise Refugee: Images, Malaysia’s first musical written in English. It was staged in August 2006.

Isaac left Malaysia in July 2008 and went to France to pursue his dreams. He is currently studying composition at Conservatoire de Montpellier, under M. Christophe de Coudenhove.

Having the privilege to work with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra in the MPO Composer Forumplus, his recent work 50% was premiered in June 2009 and Gambaran Tarian Singa (A Lion Dance Impression) was premiered in February 2010.

His notable works include: Ride for orchestra, My Color Pencils for trumpet, trombone and piano, Autumn Thoughts for choir, Green Tea Concert Suite for orchestra etc.
